Privacy policy

Madeira Diaspora SA (MDSA) respects your privacy and follows the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). This policy explains what we collect and why.

What we collect

  • When you order: your name, email address, phone number and, for courier delivery, your address.
  • When you become a member: your name, email address, cellphone number, town or area, and the amount and frequency you chose.
  • When you list a business: the business details and picture you give us for the directory, and your own name and email address so we can contact you.
  • When you sign in: your email address, and the details you choose to keep on "My details" (name, cellphone number and area).
  • When you join the Young Adults or the Madrinhas: your name, date of birth, area, email address, cellphone number, and your gender (Young Adults) or how you would like to help (Madrinhas).
  • When you give or request an item on Bless It Forward: your name, email address, cellphone number and area, the item's details and photos, and, if you are collecting, the collection address. When you request an item we also ask for your ID number (or passport number and country).
  • When you place an advert on Classifieds or a job on Find a job: your name, email address, cellphone number, area, and the advert or job details and photos.
  • When you book an event: your name, email address and cellphone number, and for each person on the booking their full name, ID or passport number, cellphone number and email address, your answers to the event's booking questions (for example vehicle details, shirt sizes, dietary needs and an emergency contact), the terms you accepted and your typed signature with the date and time.
  • When you make a job seeker profile: your name, contact details, date of birth, ID or passport number, nationality and work permit, the work you are looking for, your photo and your CV.
  • When you contact us: your name, email address and message.
  • When you visit the website: anonymous visit statistics, such as the pages viewed and the country you visit from, so we can improve the website. We do not use advertising cookies.

Why we use it

To process your order, membership, event booking or listing, run the community boards and events, deliver what you bought, reply to you, and keep the records the law requires. If you agree, we may also send you news about MDSA and its events. You can stop this at any time.

Every item, advert, job and profile is checked by the MDSA committee before it shows on the website.

Who can see it

  • On the website: business details in a directory listing, and the item, advert or job details you post, with your town or area. Your own contact details are never shown on the website.
  • Bless It Forward: when an item is given to you, the giver receives your name, cellphone number, email address and the last 4 digits of your ID number, and you receive the giver's name, cellphone number and email address, so you can arrange the handover yourselves. A collection address is sent only to the person who gets the item.
  • Classifieds: buyers message the seller through the website. Your contact details are shared only if you reply.
  • Find staff and Find a job: businesses see a job seeker's profile without contact details. Your contact details and CV are shared only with a business you agree to talk to.
  • Events: the event organisers see your booking. Details needed for the event, such as names and room preferences, may be shared with the accommodation and other service providers for that event.
  • The MDSA committee: the committee members who manage memberships, orders, events, the directory and the community boards.

We share your details only as described above, with the courier delivering your order, and with PayFast to process payment. We never sell your information.

ID numbers

We ask for ID numbers on Bless It Forward, on job seeker profiles and on event bookings (for the event's registration and indemnity) for safety, so that if something goes wrong, for example fraud, MDSA can give the details to the police or other authorities.

ID numbers are stored locked (encrypted) and only the MDSA committee can open them. Every time a committee member opens one, it is recorded. On Bless It Forward, the full ID number is deleted 12 months after the handover, and on event bookings 12 months after the event; only the last 4 digits are kept. The emailed record of an event booking shows only the last 4 digits.

Payments

Card payments are handled by PayFast. MDSA never receives or stores your card details.

Keeping it safe

Your information is stored securely and kept only as long as needed for the purpose above, or as long as the law requires.

Your rights

You may ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, or object to how we use it. Email info@madeiradiasporasa.co.za. If you are not happy with our answer, you may complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.
