Accordionist
Claudio Alho
Some passions begin with a choice. For Claudio Alho, that choice was made at a very young age in Madeira, when he pointed to an accordion and knew it was the instrument he wanted to play. Little did he know that the small accordion he had persuaded his parents to win in a shop raffle would become the beginning of a lifelong journey and career.
A member of the Casa Social da Madeira de Pretoria since birth, Claudio received his first little accordion at just four years old while visiting Madeira. By the age of seven, he had already travelled to Boston, USA, performing with the Rancho Folclórico da Casa Social da Madeira de Pretoria. His musical journey later expanded beyond traditional Portuguese music into classical and contemporary styles, earning him recognition through competitions such as the South African Talent Championship and the National Eisteddfod Academy, as well as distinctions through the London College of Music.
Throughout his career, Claudio has performed across South Africa and internationally, including in Madeira, where he has shared his music at traditional cultural celebrations. His performances have also featured at major sporting events, including Portugal versus South Africa in Bloemfontein and two rugby fixtures at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. In 2022, he was awarded the Medalha de Mérito on Portugal Day for his contribution to the Portuguese community and its cultural traditions.
In 2023, Claudio's story was featured on RTP, Portugal's public broadcaster, as part of a programme exploring Portuguese communities around the world. The feature highlighted his musical journey and work with Accordion Clinic SA.
In recent years, Claudio has embarked on an exciting new chapter with the digital accordion. Combining traditional accordion sounds with modern technology and a wide range of musical possibilities, he is exploring new ways to push the boundaries of the instrument. With the ability to create a one-man-band experience, he aims to showcase the accordion's versatility and introduce it to a new generation of audiences.
Beyond performing, Claudio is the founder of Accordion Clinic SA, specialising in accordion repairs and restoration, and a founding member of the South African Free Reed Association (SAFRA). Through his work, he remains dedicated to promoting the accordion and ensuring its continued growth in South Africa.
